Vdetector-P2 For Pediatric Oncology Patients

The Asociación Capitán Antonio was founded in 2017 in memory of Antonio, a boy who sadly lost his fight against cancer. At that time, a group of family and friends decided to create a non-profit association with all funds raised going to the oncology plant, Virgen de las Nieves Maternity and Pediatric Hospital (Hospital Materno-Infantil Virgen de las Nieves), located in Granada, Spain.

The association’s objectives are to support hospital improvements and furnish or equip the rooms and common spaces in the pediatric oncology area. It also seeks to care for families, organize activities for children, support research, and raise awareness among the general public.

The Asociación Capitán Antonio carries out various activities to raise awareness of their projects and the diseases that affect children of these ages. Among other activities, the association organizes popular races, visits by Super Heroes to boys and girls with cancer, and educational talks. On October 12, they also hold the most important event of the year—the annual Memorial children’s soccer tournament.

As part of the organization’s ongoing efforts, the Asociación Capitán Antonio is spearheading a project aimed at providing the Maternity and Pediatric Hospital of Granada with specific medical equipment that allows medical professionals to verify the orientation and vascular distribution of their pediatric oncology patients. In this way, they’re able to determine the most viable route for a cannula transfer or injection.

The Fundación Amara NextGen collaboration would contribute to the purchase of three Vdetector-P2 handheld medical vein finders, at a total cost of €6,671.43 (€2,223.81/device).

One of the association’s first projects was to provide all the rooms on the oncology floor of the hospital with chair-beds to allow visiting relatives to rest. Building on this, the Asociación Capitán Antonio is now seeking to furnish the Day Hospital on the pediatric floor with armchairs.

Autonomous Photovoltaic Systems

The "Autonomous photovoltaic systems in the Cherán Atzicurín indigenous community, Michoacán, Mexico" project is framed within the "Basic Ecotechnological Housing" program, coordinated by the IIES (Institute for Ecosystem and Sustainability Research) and the GIEB (Group for Biotechnological Innovation and Bioenergy). This program aims to develop solutions that improve rural housing and the development of more sustainable dwellings. Their research focus and the work they carry out is centered around the following areas: water supply, sanitation, energy, food, waste and shelter.

Cherán Atzicurín, Michoacán, will be the first of the three communities to benefit from the “Basic Ecotechnological Housing” project. With regard to the community’s current energy situation, the vast majority of inhabited homes have an energy supply (98.37%), almost 100% have no insulation at all, and only 2.5% use some type of heating. In this small community of 2,942 inhabitants and 734 inhabited houses, there are eight houses that still do not have electricity, all of them located on the outskirts of the town. There is also no electricity in the surrounding pedestrianized areas, which creates security problems for the local inhabitants.

The project to be carried out by the Fundación Amara NextGen would consist of the supply and installation of autonomous photovoltaic systems for lighting these homes, as well as the outdoor spaces that surround them.

The budget would amount to 25,000 MXN/household.

Collaboration with the program STEIA from Fundación AMÁS

The Fundación AMÁS is an organization that supports, promotes and defends the rights of the persons with intellectual disabilities and their families in the Community of Madrid.

Its program STEIA is a service oriented for minors with disability or ASD diagnose, aged between 6 and 18, and their families. STEIA offers support on several points: personal development (communication, focus, memory, decision taking, literacy), physical wellbeing (coordination, motor skills), emotional wellbeing (self-esteem, expression of emotions) and interpersonal relationships. The professionals go along with the children in their normal environment so that they can develop their day to day and so that the families know how to respond to different necessities that arise daily.

The goal of the program is to give continuity to the Early Attention Stage and be helpful in the Transition to Adult Life. The schedule of contact is in the afternoons, along with the school year (September through June) and a team of 16 professionals, supporting 115 children/young adults with disabilities and their families, participates in the program.

Some families directly take over the monthly payments for this service (1,200-2,500€ per academic year, depending on the subsidy received), but several other, with more limited economic resources, cannot face this extra cost. In those cases, the Fundación AMÁS offers a program of reliefs that cover partially or entirely the monthly payments of the people who need it most. However, the resources for these scholarships are extremely limited, and AMÁS cannot always support all the minors that need it.

The Fundación Amara NextGen would support with a contribution of 5,000€ to the Fundación AMÁS scholarship fund, to be allocated to the users with limited resources.
